Topside Helmet Light — FAQ
What is the Topside helmet light? The Topside is a combined front and rear light that clips onto your helmet, sitting at driver eye-level rather than down at wheel or frame height. It gives you a wide-angle beam to see by, plus rear visibility, in one unit.
Why should I use a bike helmet light? Many cyclists choose helmet lights because they sit higher than bike-mounted lights, making them more noticeable in busy traffic and when riding among parked cars or larger vehicles. The higher mounting position can help improve your visibility to other road users. The flashing modes are designed to help improve your visibility during daylight as well as at night. Using lights in daylight can help make cyclists more noticeable to drivers.
How bright is the Topside? 100 lumens with a magnified lens, using a Cree LED visible from up to 500 metres away in good conditions.
Is the light blinding to drivers? The Topside bike helmet light was designed to not blind drivers. The wide angle lens gives a bright glow rather than a tight blinding beam.
How long does the battery last? Up to 43 hours on a full charge, depending on which mode you’re using. Red-white-red-white is the 43 hours mode.
Is the Topside waterproof? Yes. It’s rated IP65, so it’s built to handle any rain storm and wet-weather riding.
How do I charge it? It’s USB rechargeable — no separate charger to lose, no batteries to replace.
What modes does it have? Seven modes in total, covering both flash and constant settings. You can use it as a front or a back light or a combination of both at the same time
How much does it weigh? 68 grams, so you won’t notice it on the helmet once it’s fitted.
Will it fit my helmet? It’s designed to fit most crash helmets using tool-free mounting clips — no drilling, no permanent fixings, and it’s easy to move between helmets if you own more than one.
It is safe to use a bike helmet light? Unlike most other bike helmet lights, the Brightside light has a break away feature. If you have an accident and hit your head, the light will come out of its mount and the mount will move as it is on a rubber stretch strap. ( some lights use a hook and loop or screw on permanent fitting which we believe can impede the helmet)
What’s the difference between the Topside and the Brightside light? The Topside mounts on your helmet and covers front and rear visibility. The Brightside is a separate side-facing amber light that mounts to your bike frame, designed to cover the gap most bike lights miss — visibility from the side, which matters most at junctions and roundabouts where a large share of cycling accidents happen.
Can I use the Topside as my main light? It’s designed as a secondary or backup light to complement your main front and rear lights, though in a pinch it’s bright enough to get you home safely.
Does the Topside come in different colours? [Update once live] Yes — alongside the original colour, the Topside is available in additional colourways for riders who want their gear to match their bike or kit. We have an excellent pink and an electric blue light although in limited numbers at the moment.
Is a helmet light legal in the UK? Yes. helmet-mounted lights are legal in the UK and are a popular way to increase visibility because the light sits higher than traditional bike-mounted lights. However, we recommend using the Topside alongside standard front and rear bike lights for maximum visibility and to meet lighting requirements when riding after dark
Why does the light have front and rear lights? Having both front and rear lights in a single helmet-mounted unit means you can increase your visibility in both directions without needing separate helmet lights.
Is the light visible during the day? Yes. The flashing modes are designed to help improve your visibility during daylight as well as at night. Using lights in daylight can help make cyclists more noticeable to drivers. The helmet light really comes into its own when cyclists a in the shadow of a building or trees. amongst traffic and hen normal lights are obscured by all manner of things.

Thoroughly pleased with this product. Very bright, multiple settings, quick recharge, easy to fit & remove (plus spare fixing because, although this one seems well-made, its always the fixing that breaks). Perfect for catching the eye of drivers that didn’t see your handlebar lights or high-viz jacket, because you can literally point it at their face. Only slight gripe is that it doesn’t remember the last-used setting, though after a few weeks of commuting my hands do the setting without me even thinking, so can’t grumble too much really.

I didn’t know what to expect from this light, but I soon found out. On arrival, I put it on charge whilst I fixed the base unit to my crash helmet, this took about a minute and in that time the light unit was fully charged. I then went outside to check the position of the light, which to me didn’t seem that bright, until I noticed all the registration plates of the cars parked in the dark courtyard were lit up, I covered the light up and the plates disappeared. At 06:00hrs this morning I set off on a training ride and the Topside light lit my way, even on the darkest unlit road, perfectly. I was so impressed! I even used it as a weapon. When the idiot car driver drove toward me with his main beam on, I just pointed the torch straight at him and he quickly turned his lights down.
Superb!
Thanks
Andy.
